Local homes in Newport

and bigger...

as we get closer to the "Mansions"

Travel by pedicab to the Mansions

Newport mansions:
The purpose of these opulent super-mansions, built in America's "gilded age" (late 1800's-early 1920's), was to host social events for the rich and famous in the summer months. In order to be "accepted" into the Newport social society, your family couldn't have worked for the past 3 generations! Caroline Astor created the "social register" and it was capped at 400 names.

First Mansion:
Marble House: Inspired by Petit Trianon at Versailles, built by Alva Vanderbilt & Richard Morris Hunt out of 500,000 cu ft of marble and gilded wood.

Next mansion:

Rosecliff: This original Newport estate was expanded and designed after the Grand Trianon at Versailles by Tessie Oelrichs, heiress to a silver mining fortune, in 1891. Tessie hosted the famous "Bal Blanc," which highlighted the Astor Cup Race in August 1904. She decorated Rosecliff with white hydrangeas, roses, orchids, and lilies, ordered white swans for the fountain, and had a fleet of white ships constructed to float on the shore beyond the estate.

This was where the Great Gatsby was filmed
